Burn injury and scar information

Burn Care and Scar Reconstruction in Rawalpindi

A fresh burn and a mature burn scar require very different care. Large, deep, electrical or chemical burns—and burns affecting the face, hands, airway or major joints—need prompt hospital assessment rather than an ordinary clinic appointment.

Understand your options before deciding

What to do after a new burn

Stop contact with the heat source, cool the area promptly with cool or lukewarm running water, remove nearby jewellery or loose clothing when safe, and do not pull away material stuck to the skin. Do not apply ice, butter or toothpaste. Seek urgent medical care when the burn is deep, extensive, chemical, electrical or associated with breathing symptoms.

How burns are assessed

Clinical teams consider cause, depth, area, location, circulation, pain, age, other injuries and medical conditions. Treatment may include cleaning, appropriate dressings, pain control, fluids, infection management or surgery in a hospital setting.

Care after the wound has healed

Healed burn scars may become raised, itchy, painful, darker or lighter. Scars crossing a joint can tighten into a contracture and restrict movement. Assessment considers function, scar maturity and previous grafting.

Possible reconstructive options

Depending on the problem, a plan may include scar care, pressure or silicone strategies, therapy, injections, laser treatment, scar release, skin grafting or flap reconstruction. No single option is right for every scar, and clinic availability must be confirmed.

Recovery and follow-up

Burn reconstruction can require staged treatment, dressings, splinting and rehabilitation. A released contracture can recur, grafts and scars change over time, and sun protection may be advised.

Cost factors

Cost depends on whether care is urgent or elective, scar size and site, treatment method, anaesthesia, hospital or clinic setting, dressings, therapy and the number of planned stages.

Treatment availability and suitability are confirmed by the clinic after assessment. These guides are educational and do not replace individual medical advice.

Patient questions

Burn Care and Scar Reconstruction in Rawalpindi FAQs

Does this clinic page replace emergency burn care?

No. Fresh severe, deep, chemical, electrical, facial, hand or airway burns require prompt hospital assessment.

Should ice be placed on a fresh burn?

No. Cool or lukewarm running water is generally used for cooling; ice can further injure tissue.

Can a burn scar restrict movement?

Yes. A scar crossing a joint or mobile area can tighten and form a contracture that limits movement.

Can every burn scar be removed?

No. Treatment may improve selected symptoms, movement or appearance, but it cannot restore completely uninjured skin.

When is burn-scar surgery considered?

Surgery may be discussed for contracture, functional restriction, unstable scar, tissue deficiency or selected appearance concerns after appropriate assessment.

Will burn reconstruction require more than one procedure?

Sometimes. Complex scars or contractures may need staged surgery, therapy or additional treatment, but the plan varies.
